PARQUE NATURAL DE SES SALINES D┤EIVISSA I FORMENTERA
The Natural Park is situated in area that lies between southern Ibiza and northern Formentera, the natural park also includes the sea channel that separates both islands. It encompasses 2,838.44 hectares of land and some 9,012 hectares of water.
The maritime component: The sea represents 75% of the park´s total area, characterized by the ecological value of its underwater meadows of Posidonia oceanica. This underwater plant, which can only be found in the Mediterranean, helps to maintain communities of fish and other underwater organismss. At the same time it also oxygenates the water, whilst protecting beaches from wave erosion and conserving the dune systems. The Natural Park had been declared an Item of World Heritage by the UNESCO.
Vegetation: The park´s on-land areas contain examples of most of the vegetation characteristic of Ibiza and Formentera, with 178 species of plants. Represented there are Mediterranean pinewoods, coastal savins, coastal cliff vegetation and Arthrocnemetum fruticosi and halophilous plants.
Fauna: 210 differents species of birds have been registered in the park. Particularly important are it´s populations of water birds, including flamingos, the black-winged stilt, the shelduck, the snowy plover and sea birds like Audouin´s gull and the Balearic shearwater. The Formentera salt lake known as Pudent has one of the biggest concentrations of black-necked. Other animals worth mentioning in the park´s on-land areas include the lizard and several unique native species of snails and beetles.

Ses Salines d’Eivissa i Formentera Nature Park management department whish to inform the need to protect and preserve one of the most known and visited Formentera areas: the pound of the Espalmador island.
This pound is a very singular natural spot, ideal for resting, nesting and reproduction of aquatic birds, which are highly sensitive to the changes caused by human presence, especially in summer.
This fact provokes that the above said birds arrives to the pond, in the time, are themselves forced to move out to other areas.
Because of this, the Nature Park has limited and the perimeter of this area to avoid visitors to trespassing it to bathe in the mud. This prohibition is formulated in the law (132/2005, on December 23, approval of master plan for use and management of ses Salines d’Eivissa I Formentera nature park).
On the other hand, the Nature Park has availed an access delimited by ropes that allow visitors to walk from the beach to the pond, so they can enjoy the sights without spoiling the dune system that surrounds the area.
BATHING AND USING THE SLUDGES IS STRICTLY BANNED BY THE LAW (more so as there is no sanitary guarantee of the quality of the mud).
